PEB Day Of Dedication 2016


PEB held the Day of Dedication 2016 on 5 November 2016 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre Hotel. This was an occasion to celebrate the role and contribution of professional engineers in the development of Singapore. It was also a time for the profession to pledge its continued dedication and service to society and commitment to high standards of professional engineering practice. About 300 professional engineers, guests, and certificate and award recipients attended the event.

The Guest-of-Honour for the event, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Mr Desmond Lee, presented registration certificates to 102 PEs in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, 4 specialist PEs in geotechnical engineering and 23 ASEAN Chartered PEs. In addition, Gold Medal Awards were presented to 12 outstanding graduates from NUS and NTU.

Mr Desmond Lee also presented the Distinguished Professional Engineers Award to Er. Tan Ee Ping and Er. Liew Mun Leong. The Distinguished Professional Engineer Award is given to a professional engineer who is recognised widely as a distinguished member of the profession who as attained high standards in professional competence and expertise and inspires other members of the profession.

In his address, Mr Desmond Lee said that the engineering profession provided challenging and fulfilling careers for young Singaporeans entering the field and added that there was a need to build up Singapore’s engineering capability. He said that in order to achieve a strong engineering core, the government, private sector and academic institutions must work together to develop the profession.

Mr Lee also noted that challenges such as resources constraints, environmental sustainability and ageing population called for the engineering community to continue to harness technology and push boundaries to provide integrated and innovative solutions. PEB President Er. Ho Siong Hin said that it was encouraging to note that the number of professional engineers registered this year was a record since year 2007. He shared that PEB had broadened the scope of approved qualifications in that more local and overseas qualifications were being recognised. In addition, the scope of registration had also been expanded to include registration of professional engineers in a new basic branch of chemical engineering as well as registration of specialist professional engineers in lift and escalator engineering, crane engineering, access platform engineering and pressure vessel engineering.

Er. Ho added that the registration process had been streamlined with the introduction of changes such as the reduction of practical experience duration requirements for taking Practice of Professional Engineering examination and option to take oral examination for experienced applicants. .

Er. Ho reminded all professional engineers to uphold high standards in their practice, always act with prime regard to the public interest and deliver professional engineering services with knowledge, competence and due diligence. (Click to read PEB President’s speech)

The presentation of certificates and awards was followed by the taking of the Professional Engineer’s Pledge by all PEs to affirm their dedication to serve society and the profession.
